Highland Park distillery from the Orkney islands (located far North from the "mainland" Scotland) has been very active in recent years in bringing new ranges of bottlings to the market. We've seen the Viking legends of past come alive with the Norse Gods and Viking warrior whisky series, but now a new bottling comes forth to remind us of the not-so-distant past, and the stories of the origin of the distillery and it's founder, Magnus Eunson. Edrington Finland released this new bottling for the Finnish market on 6th of September in a grand manner at the famous "Fiskars village" some 100 kilometres outside of our capital. The release coincided with the first-ever Highland games event in our country at Fiskars village.
Martin Markvardsen, the senior brand ambassador of Highland Park, honoured us with his presence, taking us on a vivid journey through the distillery's historical beginnings, alongside with lovely drams of HP! These drams included a sample of their new make spirit (wow, quite delicious!), as well as the 12yo, 18yo whiskies, followed by the new "Dark Origins". The whole evening culminated with a tasting of Highland Park's Dark Origins whisky chocolate truffles - a handcrafted creation of a local confectioner extraordinnaire, Petri Siren - and a sumptuous dinner at the local landmark restaurant "Wärdshus".
So what about the "Dark Origins" then? This whisky has been crafted in honour of the founder of Highland Park, Magnus Eunson. Magnus was a church beadle by day, and a illicit distiller and whisky master by night. He hid his maturing whiskies in coffins and inside the church he worked at, to keep customs and excize from finding proof of his operations, and smuggled the spirit all over Scotland. Quite the "cloak and dagger" character then! When he finally got caught for the first time, he was forced to buy a lisence and so the distilling operation became legit for the first time. he second time he was caught red-handed during a smuggling operation, he had to hand over his lisence to the customs & excize man who led the bust (who then became the owner of Highland Park!), and accept banishment from the Orkneys and Scotland.
So - "Dark Origins" is also an inidcation of the cask policy for this no age statement (NAS) bottling, meaning that sherrycasks dominate the split here, which is reputed to be a combination of 80% first fill sherry casks (of which 60% is European oak and 20% American) and 20% refill sherry. The age of spirit in this bottling? Reputed to be "between 10 and 30 years".
Tasting experience
Nose: Sherried, but not a fullscale, near-blackish "sherrybomb" - rather slightly lighter in style, not unlike today's Macallans, if you get my drift. Contains definitely more sherry on the nose than the 12yo or the 18yo, and seems in general more powerful in profile. The "used match" odor, often associated with Highland Parks, is also there. Nice!
Flavour: Confirmed - more robust and flavourful than the current 12yo or 18yo - in a good way. Reminiscent of some of the older Highland Park bottlings where sherry had more of a say than today. The sherry is not overpowering, I still find the signature heather-moneyed notes in there as well - and that aforementioned "scratched matchstick". Dark, sugarfree high % cocoa chocolate, espresso perhaps? Some orange peel, and vanilla as well. "Supercharged" in flavour when compared side to side with its core range brothers.
Finish: Oaky sherried tannins, a touch of peat & smoke, some lingering honey. Very pleasant.
Comments: A Highland Park it is, no doubt about it. The family heritage is very clear in the flavour profile, even if this one seems somewhat more of a robust member of the lineage. Sometimes the younger spirit blended in appears, but overall it is very difficult to place an age on this whisky.
Tasting the Dark Origins on its own a few times I note its delicate nature also - much of that lovely sherry is easily covered should one first sip a strong ale, or eat pub grub. Sherry here is not powerful enough to compete with more robust components, so I'd really recommend respecting the whisky and eating AFTER this delicious dram.
The current trend of NAS bottlings has left many with disappointment and a slightly sour mouthfeel about the state of whisky industry versus respect for customer. As the industry was unable to produce enough whisky a few decades ago (or simply underestimated todays demand for Scotch single malts), experimentation with mixtures of younger and older distillates are more and more common. Due to age statement regulations that force one to place the age of youngest distillate used on the bottle, these whiskies come out with a name rather than a marked age on the label. Of course one can also speculate that the marketing teams are simply testing how much customers are willing to pay for a 'Flavour" (along with a good storyline and stylish packaging), and many such departments are ranting currently that it is not the age that matters - only taste. Funny how things change..!
Having said all that, I truly feel Highland Park "Dark Origins" is a good whisky, with a fairly reasonable pricetag for today's market. It gives me hope and trust in the fact that not all NAS bottlings are simply a marketing ploy, trying to get us to pay top dollar for a mostly very young, wood-finished whisky. I dare to recommend trying this at your own convenience and leisure - and to judge for yourself. Personally I am happy with the whisky, and the fact that Highland Park has maintained their commitment to quality.
Highland Park - "Dark Origins" 46,8% - Suomeksi
Highland Park, tuo Orkneyn saarten aktiivisin tislaamo, toi Suomen markkinoille uuden pullotteen, jonka Edrington Finland julkaisi 6.9.2014 pidettyjen Fiskarsin Highland Gamesien yhteydessä. Harrastajille tarjottiin linja-autokyyti Helsingistä Fiskarsiin ja takaisin. Paikan päällä Suomelle uuden Highland Games -tapahtuman lisäksi nautimme Highland Park -tastingin brand ambassador Martin Markvardsenin johdolla, ja maistelun jälkeisen illallisen ravintola Wärdshusissa.
Tapahtuman hinta oli mielestäni edullinen, ottaen huomioon koko päivälle rakennetun ohjelman. Myös ateriamme oli korkealaatuinen, ja tastingin yhteydessä nautitut, paikallisen suklaagurun Petri Sirenin luomat "Dark Origins" suklaakonvehdit olivat taivaallisia. Kaunis ilma kruunasi upean päivän etelä-Suomen maaseudulla!
Ahem, mennäänpä viskiblogiin sopivalla tavalla itse asiaan, eli tuohon "Dark Origins" pullotteeseen. Highland Parkin alkuperäinen perustaja Magnus Eunson oli paitsi kirkon mies, niin myös salakuljettaja ja laittoman tislaamon omistaja. Hän kätki kypsyvää tislettään jopa ruumisarkkuihin ja kirkon lattian alle kun tulli tai poliisi sattui paikalle. Lopulta Magnus jäi kiinni, ja hän osti itselleen lisenssin tislata laillisesti. Aivan rehtiä ei meno silti ollut, ja Magnus jäi kiinni viskin salakuljettamisesta Skotlantiin. Näin Magnus Eunson poistui sitten Highland Parkin tarinasta, karkotettuna rikollisena jota ei koskaan enää nähty Orkneyllä tai Skotlannissa.
"Dark Origins" viittaa siis Magnus Eunsoniin, ja Highland Parkin alkutaipaleeseen. Toisaalta nimestä voi päätellä myös pullotteen sisällön olevan melko sherryistä ja luonnostaan tumman väristä (HP on luopunut väriaineiden käytöstä kokonaan). Mukaan laitetun tisleen ikä vaihtelee kuulemma kymmenen ja kolmenkymmenen välillä, ja tynnyrijakauma on 80% first-fill Sherry (20% refill), josta 60% first-fill eurooppalaista tammea, ja 20% first-fill amerikkalaista tammea.Kyseessä on moderni viski, ja tynnyrien valinta näyttäisi siis olevan hyvin tärkeä osa tuotetta.Maistelukokemus
Tuoksu: Sherryinen, mutta maltillisella tavalla (ei siis mikään jyrkänmusta sherrypommi). Sherryisempi kuin nykyiset 12-vuotiast ja 18-vuotias, ja tuoksussaan voimakkaampi. Vanhan Highland Parkin raapaistu tulitikkukin löytyy tuoksussa, ja se avaa hyviä muistoja saman tislaamon aiempiin pullotteisiin.Jotain mausteista, pomeranssin kuorta.
Maku: Voimakkaampi kuin 12-vuotiaassa tai 18-vuotiaassa minusta - 1st fill sherryä mukana, mutta ei niin että koko Highland Parkin omaperäinen hunaja ja kanerva peittyisi. Se raapaistu tulitikkukin on mukana, käväisten suun makureseptoreissa hetken aikaa. Aavistus tummasta sokerittomasta suklaasta, tai kahvista. Ahh! Maussa on tosiaankin mukava fuusio totuttuja HPn makuja, mutta voimakkaampina kuin on totuttu viime vuosina näkemään - tai maistamaan. Pomeranssin kuorta, vaniljaa.
Jälkimaku: Kuivuva, sherrytynnyrin tammen tanniineja, turpeisuuttakin on mukana. Hunajaisuus jää lopuksi pinnalle tammen ja pienen savuisuuden kanssa.
Kommentit: Maistellessa tätä "NAS"-pullotetta ensin yhtenä päivänä Highland Parkin 12- ja 18-vuotiaiden nykypullotteiden seurassa tulee mieleen että saman perheen jäsenestä on selvästi kyse, mutta aika harteikkaasta sellaisesta. Makua on - enemmän, ja se hyökkää lasista voimalla jota näistä ikämerkintäisistä ei löydy samalla tavalla. Mukanaoleva sekoitus nuorta ja iäkkäämpää tislettä toimii aika hyvin. Itsekseen maisteltuna pariin otteeseen Dark Origins hämmentää: Makuprofiili kärsii nopeasti suun kemian ollessa ei-aivan-terässä, tuntuen aika vaimealta. Sherry, missäs sitä nyt olikaan? Seuraavalla kerralla sherry kuitenkin loistaa jälleen maussa, ja ensimmäisen kerran tunnelma ja makukokemus palaa - hyväähän tämä on! Huomio vain vahvistaa sen, etten lähtisi koivin syvällisesti analysoimaan viskiä vain yhden maistelun perusteella, ainakaan jos en olisi varma oman suuvärkin maistelukunnosta.
No Age Statement -pullotteita tuntuu nyt piisaavan. Syytkin ovat ainakin osittain selvillä: Viskiteollisuus ei ole pystynyt tuottamaan kulutusta vastaavaa määrää vanhoja tisleitä, joten nuorempia komponentteja on pakko nyt laittaa mukaan vanhempien ollessa kortilla. Skottiviskin ikämerkintäsääntö on selvä, pullotteen ikä pitäisi merkitä nuorimman mukaan tulleen tisleen mukaan. Sen vuoksi tällainen 10 - 30-vuotias viski, mikä Highland Parkin Dark Origins kuuleman mukaan on, myydään mieluummin kokonaan ilman ikämerkintää kuin 10-vuotiaana.
Toiset, vähemmän mairittelevat syyt NAS-pullotteiden marssiin ovat yksinkertaisesti raha ja halu kokeilla mistä kuluttaja on valmis maksamaan. Moni viskiteollisuuden pohatta jauhaa nyt mantraa, jonka mukaan maksamme mausta, emme iästä. Toisaalta heille on edullisempaa pukata viskiä ulos jo nuorena tisleenä sen sijaan että myynti tapahtuisi vasta parin vuosikymmenen kypsyttelyn jälkeen. Kuluttajille pitää vain opettaa, ettei iällä olekaan väliä, ja maku ratkaisee. Kunhan pullolla on hieno nimi, pullo/kotelo, ja tarina on vetävä, voi viskiyritys parhaassa tapauksessa onnistua myymään todella nuorta viskiä kuluttajille huippuhintaan.
Highland Park "Dark Origins" on minusta hyvä viski. Se antaa toivoa siitä, etteivät kaikki NAS-pullotteet ole tarkasti suunniteltuja kuluttajan vedätyksiä. "Dark Origins" erottuu ilahduttavalla tavalla edukseen näiden nykyajan massaviskien joukosta. Tuote on myös melko maltillisesti hinnoiteltu moneen muuhun verrattuna, vaikkei se halpa olekaan. Suosittelisin jokaiselle tästä kiinnostuneelle muutamaa rauhallista maisteluhetkeä, joiden perusteella voi sitten muodostaa oman mielipiteen hinta-laatusuhteesta.
